Assignment: Why does foam come out of bottle when Mentos are added?

Hello everyone!
Remember what we learned about a hypothesis eariler in the week during lecture in class.  A well-stated and thought out hypothesis is key to answering the following questions properly.
  1. (10 pts.)  Please post a 2-3 sentence answer to this question (worth 5 points on your participation grade).  Your answers need to be original.  There are no wrong answers, but it needs to be well thought out and based on some research.  It also needs to be plausible.   This is not a group project, but a single effort of your own.  Please use your textbook and any other source such as the Internet to come up with a hypothesis to answer this question.  Remember what we discussed in class yesterday.  Some of that could be helpful here.  Please fee free to use Internet links to your sources, cite text book, other books, people interviewed, etc.  Make links to videos too.
  2. (10 pts.)  What would happen to the foam if we used 1 mentos tablet vs. 10?  Why?
  3. (10 pts.)  What would happen to the foam if we placed several scratches on the surface of the tablets vs. not scraching the tablets?  Why?
  4. (10 pts.)  What do we need to be careful about while doing this experiment?  Safety question.
  5. (5 pts.)  Think of at least one way to test your hypothesis in class when we do the mentos-foam demo tomorrow outside.  Record this on your post as well (worth 5 points on your participation grade).  It should be 1-3 sentences long.  We can use these ideas to do some impromptu experiments then.
  6. Please post your answers to the above two items by midnight tonight.  I will grade you posts within 2 days.
  7. (10 pts)  I will make your posts available to everyone else in the class.  You are then required to make useful, polite comments on two other posts you have read and ask one question via a posting.  This will be 10 points of your participation grade.  This is usually pretty fun and we all learn a lot.

This is going to be fun!

Here is a really exciting experiment about nucleation sites for boiling that we will do outside for class next week.  I have included a cool link http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000109 to view as a warmup exercise and a photo of a launch system for the Mentos that we will use next week.

Have fun!!!
